RESULTS #152

Welcome to Results Day! How did your characters turn out this month? Did you get stuck at all or did you zip through designs?

Before we jump in, I have a fun annoucement to share. I’m partnering with local libraries this summer to lead Parent Child Drawing Workshops. We will draw together using the CREATE A CHARACTER Activity! If you’d like to be part of a creative community and meet other families, I hope you’ll join us! The first workshop will take place at Elmwood Park Library in Detroit in honor of Mother’s Day. Find details on the News & Events page. Let me know if you have any questions.

Let’s talk about inspiration!

April was a busy month. Not only did I have school visits scheduled, but we celebrated my daughter’s birthday too. Since I was a little more tied up than usual, I decided to collect shapes at our beloved local bookstore, The Book Beat when I picked up book orders for families. I’ve been teaming up with The Book Beat for years now and always enjoy my visits with Colleen, the bookstore owner.

When I asked if I could take pictures for April’s Activity sheet, she kindly approved. Scroll to see what I found!

Poetry sign, Monstera plant, detail from a Yoruba beaded sash (learn more here), stained-glass sign

This beautiful sign was made for the store in 1987 when The Book Beat expanded. It was a gift from an employee’s husband, who was also a dentist. His wife, Millie, was a longtime employee of The Book Beat and had suggested he try stained glass as a hobby. The next time you visit the bookstore, see if you can spot this lovely piece of art made by Sylvan!

On to sketches. Here is a before and after look at Activity sheet #152…

I began with Shape #3 because I saw a horse pretty quickly when I rotated my sheet. Then, I approached the rest of my designs from a storytelling perspective. After I sketched my horse, I asked myself “What does horse want?” This helped me come up with ideas for the rest of my shapes. Shape #2 was the last character I created (and what I think Horse wanted most!). What would you add to this list?

Thanks for stopping by today. I have big news to share in May! Download a new CREATE A CHARACTER Activity sheet on Monday, May 6th and learn about a special project I’ve been working on! If you’d like me to include your characters in May’s RESULTS post, send them my way by Monday, May 27th (be sure to name your characters too). Happy Creating!
